DIENST Verpackungstechnik develops automated logistics solution

The company DIENST from Hofheim near Frankfurt specializes in individual solutions in the packaging industry. With the "PAL" - Packaging for Automated Logistics - it takes another big step towards automation.

E-commerce sales have been growing steadily for years, and the pandemic has intensified this development. The increasing individuality of orders is putting pressure on the logistics industry - agile solutions are needed instead of standardized production and packaging lines.

PAL - Packaging for Automated Logistics, is the name DIENST has given to the new system, which will be delivered to a customer in the logistics sector in the spring of 2022, and which addresses precisely this issue: PAL's extensive automation enables packages with different fillings to run mixed through the packaging line. Previously, it was necessary to select a separate setting for each combination and then run them one after the other. This flexibility enables productivity of up to 72 packages per minute while saving on labor costs. With the PAL, DIENST supplies an all-round system: from carton erector to package ready for dispatch, all steps are integrated in the 40-meter packaging line.

Dispatch via QR code
The individual contents depending on the order, including brochures and return labels, are inserted into the packaging. The latter is already done fully automatically; in the future, that will also happen with all objects. In the beginning, individual components are still inserted manually on the assembly line. "We offer our customer fully automatic product security by means of a QR code," says Wolfgang Lapke, project manager at DIENST. The PAL is the first system of its kind on the market. The solution lies in the QR code printed on each package. This tells the machine which product is inserted, which is constantly compared with the order in the higher-level system. In the event of errors, the package is ejected directly.

One year, one location

DIENST celebrates one year at the new location

The packaging specialist has been part of the POLAR Group for over 10 years. The first joint projects are already underway, and the managing director is content with the development.

DIENST was founded in 1988 by Walter Dienst and was last located in Hochheim. In 2011, the POLAR Group took over the company completely. After the production has already been operating in the new plant for several years, the administration was also relocated to Hofheim in February 2021. Synergies have been created at the joint location, and departments such as human resources and marketing look after both companies in parallel. The first celebration with both companies on the occasion of two anniversaries in september 2021 also created a stronger sense of community internally.

Michael Wombacher, Managing Director of the POLAR Group, is content with the last year: "With the merger of POLAR and DIENST, we have also added handling and automation to our range of services. This is an opportunity that neither of us could have tackled on our own, and it has already enabled us to grow our sales this year“.

DIENST has specialized in manufacturing packaging machinery for global manufacturers of food and non-food items since 1988. Through customized solutions - also for entire packaging lines - DIENST is a recognized partner of leading international producers and major corporations.

Factory acceptance via a video chat – how FAT and SAT are now working digitally

DIENST in Hofheim near Frankfurt is adapting to the digital age: Customers will be able to run SATs remotely in the future as well as digital FATs.

Home offices, remote working and video conferencing have quickly taken their place in our working world during the past 18 months. Images and sound – meetings rarely need anything else. It was not a concept for industry that could be used in the middle of the factory halls where functions have to be tested, settings made and hands-on work is needed. DIENST from Hofheim, has now made this possible for a customer in the Ukraine: a remote SAT.

"We have around 25 projects a year that must undergo one SAT and one FAT each," said Wolfgang Lapke, project manager at the packaging machine manufacturer. The testing takes a long time, often an entire working week. This is an important argument for using remote testing.

Software support via an industrial control system

This modern industrial control system allows DIENST technicians to access a machine online. This enables software to be easily updated and errors can also be found and eliminated. Communications occur via a video chat - the machine can be shown in action through the use of professional cameras. Specific stations and working steps can be focused on and any open questions can be discussed directly. Making spontaneous detailed shots of the machine from any angle is no problem and there is plenty of flexibility available for implementing this thanks to additional smartphone cameras.

Most of the systems supplied by DIENST are customized as hardly any of the machines are the same. The machine runs through all of its programs during a test and DIENST agrees upon the precise sequence separately with each customer. Time is needed for the many format changes. "These time windows are on-site dead time for the customer" said project manager Lapke. This is where the great benefit of video conferencing comes to the fore: The customer can devote himself to other tasks and topics whilst the machine is being reconfigured and this means that he loses less time. Traveling to and fro is no longer needed. "A remote SAT reliably covers the technical issues and today's video conferencing options ensure that the human component is not neglected either” explained the project manager.

FAT has proven itself in remote mode and the team now has a well-established process. Remote testing is already being regularly carried out with customers in the USA. There will probably be an increased demand for this in the future from customers here in Europe: Communication tools have experienced a real boom as a result of the pandemic, and many companies have not only got used to using them, but have also learned about the many benefits of video conferencing.
